Individual-Level Loss Aversion in Riskless and Risky Choices

چکیده
Individual-Level Loss Aversion in Riskless and Risky Choices Loss aversion can occur in riskless and risky choices. Yet, there is no evidence whether people who are loss averse in riskless choices are also loss averse in risky choices. We measure individual-level loss aversion in riskless choices in an endowment effect experiment by eliciting both WTA and WTP from each of our 360 subjects (randomly selected customers of a car manufacturer). All subjects also participate in a simple lottery choice task which arguably measures loss aversion in risky choices. We find substantial heterogeneity in both measures of loss aversion. Loss aversion in the riskless choice task and loss aversion in the risky choice task are highly significantly and strongly positively correlated. We find that in both choice tasks loss aversion increases in age, income, and wealth, and decreases in education. JEL Classification: C91, C93, D81

Decision Under Uncertainty and Moral Emotions
The purpose of this paper is to examine the impact of moral emotions (guilt/innocence) on decisions under risk. We hypothesize that participants’ aversion to risky choices and preference for risky choices vary as a function of their moral role (guilty/innocent), and thus of moral assumptions, rather than only in view of the gain–loss formulation effects (Tversky & Kahneman, 1981). The effect of...
متن کاملReference Point Effects in Riskless Choice Without Loss Aversion
Numerous studies have demonstrated that preferences among options in riskless choice are often influenced by reference points. That is, an existing reference level or status quo can bias preferences toward new alternatives. Reference-dependent effects have typically been attributed to loss aversion (Tversky & Kahneman, 1991). The key idea is that when an option is being considered, an individua...
متن کاملRelative Risk Aversion Is Constant: Evidence from Panel Data
Most classical tests of constant relative risk aversion (CRRA) based on individual portfolio composition use cross sectional data. Such tests must assume that the distributions of wealth and preferences are independent. We use panel data to analyze how individuals’ portfolio allocation between risky and riskless assets varies in response to changes in total financial wealth. We find the elastic...
متن کاملThe Neural Basis of Financial Risk Taking
Investors systematically deviate from rationality when making financial decisions, yet the mechanisms responsible for these deviations have not been identified. Using event-related fMRI, we examined whether anticipatory neural activity would predict optimal and suboptimal choices in a financial decision-making task. We characterized two types of deviations from the optimal investment strategy o...
متن کاملA Context-Dependent Model of the Gambling Effect
This paper presents a context-dependent theory of decision under risk. The relevant contextual factor is the presence of a riskless lottery in a preference comparison. The theory only deviates from expected utility if the set of options contains both riskless and risky lotteries. The main motivation for the theory is to explain the gambling effect. Contrary to previous theories of the gambling ...
